Essential Oils are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of a plant. They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant. If you have ever enjoyed the scent of a rose, a walk by a field of lavender, or the smell of freshly cut mint, you have experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. Essential oils can lift ones mood, calm the senses, and elicit powerful emotional responses. Yet the use of essential oils goes well beyond their fragrant appeal.
Essential oils have been used throughout history in many cultures for their medicinal and therapeutic benefits. Modern times are trending toward a more holistic approach to self care and growing scientific validation of alternative health practices are driving a rediscovery of the profound health benefits of essential oils. Many have powerful cleansing properties and are naturally antimicrobial. Their unique chemical structure allows them to absorb readily through the skin for immediate systemic response, while diffusing them permeates the air and adds a quality of life that is unparalleled in it's experience.
doterra Essential Oils
This first step into introducing essential oils into your home is to choose a reputable company that is in line with your expectations of purity and responsibility. For these reasons, I am a loyal customer with doTERRA. Their essential oils ( as well as their entire product line ) have proven time and time again to be shining examples of how a company can easily choose to create a product of integrity.
Why is it important to support companies with integrity? Because our moral responsibility is to take as little as we can from the earth, and give back more. This is something doTERRA strives to do...on a global level.
doTERRA's Co-Impact Sourcing is one of the main reasons why I chose to work with them.
"Co-Impact Sourcing is an initiative that seeks to develop long-term, mutually beneficial supplier partnerships while creating sustainable jobs and providing reliable income in underdeveloped areas. doTERRA is committed to the ethical treatment of its suppliers by providing on-time payments at fair prices. Growers and harvesters are encouraged to form cooperative groups to share collective benefits and bargaining power while improving skills and capacity."
What about purity?
Purity in essential oils is a crucial point to consider. Every day we are met with environmental threats, whether pollution, allergens, or stress, our bodies are bombarded with toxins. When we receive a prescription medication from the doctor, we expect that the medication is responsibly made and free from any contaminants, right? When we put products on our skin, we tend to think nothing of the ingredients on the label. Why is that?
Did you know the Environmental Working Group has discovered that:
More than 500 products sold in the U.S. since 2008 contain ingredients banned from cosmetics in Japan, Canada, or the European Union.
One in 5 of all products contain chemicals linked to cancer, 80% contain ingredients that commonly contain hazardous impurities, and 56% contain penetration enhancers that help deliver ingredients deeper into the skin, according to EWG’s 2007 analysis.
Lead, formaldehyde, and placenta are among the ingredients used by the industry and sold to consumers.
And this is why it is so important to know and trust that what it is we put on our skin is just as important as what we put in our body. Known impurities, like petrochemicals or heavy metals, have dire consequences in our bodies. From damage to our reproductive system, to weakening our endocrine system (and so much more), adulteration to health and body care products is of grave concern as we see dire health issues on the rise, coming back to toxins found in our bodies from what we put in or what we put on.
doTERRA's commitment to purity
There is no government standard in the essential oils sector because the industry falls into the ‘supplement’ category, essential oils aren't thoroughly tested, and companies don't have any standards they must abide by. The $37 billion dollar industry is scarcely regulated which means labels don't necessarily present all the facts about what exists inside your bottles. The Organic Consumers Association suspects that "95 per cent of vitamins consist of some degree of synthetics, ingredients that Cummins says "your body rejects as synthetic invaders"" Unfortunately, what this means is you can't trust every oil or health and beauty aid on store shelves is exactly what the label says. Many of the cheaper, easier to acquire oils are grown and harvested in ‘synthetic’ environments, outside of their native environments, and in ways that profoundly affects the potency and natural benefits an oil can have in the human body, and in the way the growing, harvesting, and distilling impacts our environment.
"Without an accepted standard for essential oil quality, doTERRA created its own testing process, calling it CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade®. The CPTG process certifies that there are no added fillers, synthetic ingredients, or harmful contaminants in their essential oils that would reduce their efficacy. doTERRA even goes a step further, putting all their products and the packaging through a battery of tests to ensure a long and effective shelf-life. This protocol ensures potency, purity, and consistency batch to batch."
